Until 1840 this quaint, 300-year-old
inn was known as The New Star. Its name was changed
when Horse Guards on security duties in nearby Petworth
Park began frequenting it. At least, that's one
version. Another is that the same body of soldiers
used it as their regular watering hole while transporting
gold from London to Portsmouth.
Converted
from three cottages, a rambling series of tastefully
refurbished rooms features stripped beams, open
fires, pine paneling and antique furnishings. The
restaurant and terrace both enjoy views across the
Rother Valley to the South Downs.
The Horse Guards Inn is situated off the A272 in
the center of the picturesque village of Tillington.
The pub is located opposite the village church and
its beautiful Scott's Guard Turret, which was made
famous in one of Turner's paintings.
The historic town of Petworth is only 1 mile to
the east, the residential towns of Midhurst and
Billingshurst are within an 8 mile radius. By road
or train there are good links to London and Chichester.
